Yesterday director Spike Lee Tweeted an address to his 250,000 followers that he thought was the home of George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed Trayvon Martin in what police are beginning to confirm was a self defense case. However, the tweeted address was not Zimmerman’s, instead it was an elderly couple in their 70's, who ended up fleeing from their home in fear, due to the death threats they were receiving. A group of students protesting in Miami, Florida, stormed and looted a Walgreen’s Drug store, stealing everything they could get their hands on.
Mainstream media and Activists such as Al Sharpton pushed the story to such an extreme it took on a life of it’s own with very few ever really looking to alternative sources of information on the case. Collaborative evidence in the case was released yesterday showing Martin attacked Zimmerman, and that the pleas for help were from Zimmerman while he was being attacked. Other evidence shows Martin may have attacked Zimmerman while Zimmerman was retreating back into his truck. To top things off President Obama came out with a bizarre statement saying "if he had a son, he'd look like Trayvon". During a time of national crisis, the job of the President is to calm public fears and prevent violence, Obama did the opposite, by flaming racial embers making matters worse by identifying with Trayvon Martin. Even more bizarre in this case was the two trademarks filed by the mother of Trayvon Martin, Sybrina Fulton, who is seeking marks for the phrases “I Am Trayvon” and “Justice for Trayvon,” according to filings made last week with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Having attended school in the 60s and 70's, our biggest concern was a nuclear strike from the Soviet Union. When we heard the air raid siren, our first task was to crawl under our desk and cover the back of neck with our hands. Much good it would have done from a direct nuclear hit but the idea was to increase our chance of survival. The thought of a school terrorist style attack by a student or outside attacking was unheard of until two high school students killed 12 of their fellow students and a teacher at Columbine High School in Colorado. Since that time there have been multiple school shootings where students have been murdered, with the most recent by a radical Muslim terrorist in France. We all prepare our homes, and bug out shelters for the worst, but many don't prepare their children to handle a survival situation on their own.
The first step is to teach your child to be aware. Children should know who the troubled kids in their school are. Many times these troubled kids hang together in groups. Teach your child to identify these groups and if they overhear one of the members of this group talking about committing one of these cowardly deeds to inform the school and you right away. As a parent your next step is to remove your child from the danger as quick as possible. Teach your child if he or she sees one of these troubled kids absent from class to be on his or her guard. In almost all cases, the student shooter shows up at school after all the students are already in class. The second type of an attack is one where the attacker is not a student, like the attack in France. Many of the following ideas will increase the odds of your child's survival.

On January 12th, 2012, The Bulletin of Atomic Scientist have moved the Doomsday Clock one minute closer to midnight. It now sits at five (5) minutes to midnight. Not sure what the doomsday clock is? Since 1947 a group of Atomic Scientist have maintained a changing clock that shows our distance from a all out nuclear war. Certain world events over time have moved the hands as far back as 17 minutes from midnight such as in 1991 as the Cold War officially ended, after the fall of the Soviet Union. The Doomsday Clock has also moved to as close as 2 minutes to midnight, as in 1953 as the United States pursued the hydrogen bomb. What was the reason for the latest shift from 6 to 5 minutes?

Many people wonder how I can survive on the road. Homeless is not living in the gutter, that could be no farther than from the truth. Granted I no longer make a six figure income as I did as a Unix software developer. I had to simplify my life and rid my self of luxuries that sucked monthly money from my pocket. I had to give up most vices, there is no way you can live on the road and be addicted to drugs, alcohol or gambling and expect to have any descent living environment. How much a month do I need to live? Lets break it down...

Before any of you start in on me, I am aware this is an amendment to order 12919. However the part of handing over power to the already heavy handed Department of Homeland Security is what worries me and it should you especially after Obama signed HR 347 or the "Trespass Bill" preventing protesting at certain political events and even more terrifying the "National Defense Authorization Act" that allows the president to detain and torture American citizens without due process. On March 16, 2012, President Obama signed an (amended) executive order, called the "National Defense Resources Preparedness". This order allows the president, without going through the US Congress, the ability to seize control of corporate assets and manufacturing operations at a time the president defines a national emergency, and hand the control of these assets to the Department of Homeland Security. Section 201 of this Executive Order, Priorities and Allocations Authorities, allows the president to pass control of private corporate infrastructure to The Department of Homeland Security including, food, farm equipment, fuel, electricity, water resources, and civilian transportation.

Here we go again folks. The next major surge of gasoline prices is upon us. The commodities hedgers are jumping on the wagon buying the gasoline and oil shares as fast as they become available, driving the price of fuel to a all new level. The scary part is the President of the United States, who is supposed to be representing the people is using this as a way to push his FAILED green energy projects. Even if all of America was on board with green energy, the timing is at it's worst. This is the same as the fire department waving a cup of water in front of your burning house.
This president should be releasing some of the strategic reserve in the system, causing an oil commodities dump from the hedge fund holders, thereby driving the price down. The only good result will be he is ending his career as president with this move. Welcome to the next economic recession like we have not seen before. Tourism is going to suffer big time this summer with $5 - $6 Gasoline Prices.

With the big news that MegaUpload has been shutdown and the government has copies of files stored on the servers, the government can take it's time and review what is on them for copyrighted material and private information is going to put many in hot water. People put personal and private information on MegaUpload and their subcontract servers. My rule is never store personal information on any computer unless you encrypt it. Storing and personal or private data on the cloud is vulnerable to government seizure. This includes emails, text messaging and so on.
Encryption has one flaw with society in that we are inherently lazy. People assume their computer is safe from big brother, hackers and even theft. How many of you actually use the password feature in Windows? Did you know that even with the password feature your data is still accessible? Even a password protected computer stores documents, browsing history, emails all in unencrypted files which can be accessed in a matter of minutes. Some sensitive documents may include copies of social security cards, tax returns, medical information, and that letter you wrote your girlfriend or boyfriend last week.

Another survival tool I use everyday is the good old mountain bike. There are a few reasons this makes a good survival tool. First, you can move along on open roads around 12 to 15 mph, this is faster than most people can run and will get you somewhere in a hurry with out any fuel except human energy. Cost is relatively inexpensive, and spare parts are cheap and in abundance. The mountain bike can also be used for moving around the woodland trails, hunting and fishing or bartering your goods to market. There are even trailers that you can tow behind that will haul up to 100 lbs of goods.
Lets say all hell breaks loose and it's time to hit the road. However the roads are congested and gads lines are a mile long, and your shelter is 30 miles away. Put on your bug out pack and start pedaling. You will be at your shelter in less than four hours, while most will still be in a traffic jam or waiting for fuel. If you don't have a shelter and still need to get out of town, you can load up your survival supplies and get out of the city or suburbs to a safer location much faster than walking. Bikes are very maneuverable. you can cut across parks, sidewalks, around cars, in and out of alley ways to keep your trip as short as possible. Bikes fit the simple survival tool category.
